The Alazan Valley and Tusheti-East Georgia mountain

Brief introduction:  This trip will take you to the eastern part of Georgia - Kakheti. It is known mainly for its wine production, beautiful historical monuments and great food. During the trek we will pass through the slopes of Caucasus, fertile Alazani valley, and visit several beautiful monastery complexes. We will also head to the most remote region of Georgia, the mountains of Tusheti. We will cross twice the highest road pass in Caucasus - Abano 2994m. 

Trek route: Tbilisi - Mtskheta-David Gareji-Sighnaghi-Kvareli-Nekresi-Gremi-Omalo-Dartlo-Diklo-Alaverdi-Telavi-Ikalto-Akhmeta-Tianeti-Tbilisi

Detailed itinerary: 

Day 1 - Arrival in Tbilisi in the evening or in the early morning hours - departure to the hotel, overnight stay, assembling bikes. Afternoon departure to 20 km distant Mtskheta (former capital), on the way to visit the church of Jvari monastery, dinner, overnight at the hotel. 

Day 2 - After breakfast departure by car to Tbilisi, then on two wheels off the monastery complex of David Gareji. Tour of the complex. From here on the old road to Sagarejo. Signaghi, hotel accommodation, restaurant dinner, overnight stay. 

Cycling about 80km 

Day 3 - Cycle tour around Signaghi, visit the most eastern Georgian town of Dedoplitskharo, then back to Signaghi, dinner, overnight at the hotel. 

Cycling about 70 km 

Day 4 - After breakfast departure by bike to Gurjaani, then crossing to Kvareli (approx. 50km), a tour of the medieval fortress, visit the famous wine tunnel Khareba winery, guesthouse accommodation, dinner, overnight stay. 

Cycling about 55km 

Day 5 - Departure by bike from Kvareli to Nekresi- monastery with beautiful views of Alazani valley, then to Gremi- short monastery tour, wine tasting in one of the local cellars, then continues to the Alazani River and then through the vineyards to Tsinandali Village, Here you can visit Chavchavadze museum (one of the most important aristocratic families of Georgia), from there you can reach the center of Kakheti, Telavi. Accommodation in a guesthouse in Alvani, dinner at Naira, overnight. 

Cycling about 60 km 

Day 6 - After breakfast, by car to Pshaveli village, where the mountain road to Tusheti begins. From there the road rises to almost 3000m from the sea level of the height of the Abano pass. From the pass follows a long descent into the Tusheti itself. At the end of the day, there is still a trip to Upper Omalo. Here accommodation in the guesthouse, dinner, overnight. 

Cycling about 72 km 

Day 7 - After breakfast, a tour of the fortress above the village, then a descent to the Pirikita Alazani River, followed by a trip to the beautiful village of Shenako. Tour of the village and the church, then the mountain road to the village of Diklo. Back to Omalo with the same way. Overnight in the guesthouse. 

Cycling about 40km 

Day 8 - Morning departure on the forest road to the village of Dartlo, a tour of the village-fortress. Further down the mountain road through a number of fords to Chesho and Girevi. Along the way wonderful views. Return the same way to Omalo. Dinner and overnight at the guesthouse. 

Cycling about 70km 

Day 9 - After breakfast, we will leave the Gometsari Valley, high above the river with spectacular views of the mountain villages on the slope. We will reach the village of Verkhovani, back with the same way through Jvarboseli and Bochorna to Omalo. 

Cycling about 70km 

Day 10 - Descent from Omalo to the valley of the river, where we ascend to the Abano pass. From the pass over 30 km long descent to the Alazani valley to the village Pshaveli. From here to Alvani. Rest and dinner and overnight at the guesthouse. 

Cycling about 72km 

Day 11 - In the morning, after breakfast, departure to Akhmeta and then through the beautiful forest landscape through the Shakhvetila pass to Tianeti, dinner, and overnight in the guesthouse. 

Cycling about 60 km 

Day 12 - Departure by bike from Tianeti to Iori Valley towards Tbilisi, cycling through forests to the outskirts of Tbilisi, from there by car to Tbilisi, overnight stay at a downtown hotel. 

Cycling about 65km 

Day 13 –In the morning after breakfast, a tour of the old town of Tbilisi, visit of the Turkish bath with thermal pools, saunas and massages, then the final dinner in traditional Georgian style, overnight at the hotel. 

Day 14 - Transfer to the airport, departure.

  • Mountain bike and bicycle equipment (inflator, keys, repair kits, spare tubes, etc.);

It is possible to join the group practically on any day during the trip of the Kakheti (2-6 days) and thus shorten the possible stay on the bike path according to your own needs and time possibilities. Alternatively, it is also possible to end it sooner, for example after returning from mountain Tusheti - 10th day!….
